The Suki Awards- 2016

It's the year end and being a huge Tamil Movie buff, it was virtually impossible for not to end the year without writing a post to show some appreciation for the Tamil Films that was release in 2016. Thus here am I writing to you to present my very own award recognization  post.

Thus I call this post, The Suki Awards

Here is how it works. I have decided to award for only 5 category only with five nominations in each category. It is done taking into account films which I did watch only. Perhaps there might be a different worthy winner in your mind and the reason I did not acknowledge is highly likely I am yet to watch the film

In a year which produces so many memorable songs, it was Thali Pogathey that nicks the award just ahead of it's tight competition.

In what was a close competition between Vijay Sethupahti and Samuthirakani, Vijay Sethupahti takes the award home due to his utter rawness acting in Iraivi

It is not everyday you will see a lady play a boxing girl character with real aggression and passion. Her performance for the film can be liken to Hillary Swank performance in Million Dollar Baby.

With the ceremony heating up here comes the next big category of The Suki Award, The Best Film Of The Year.

Goodbye 2016: 5 Lessons From 2016

2016 has been a roller coaster ride for me. So many ups and downs, so many first times, so many success and of cause so many failures too. Well isn't that what makes life the greatest mystery there ever is, because you never know what is going to happen tomorrow. 

A lot of things happen to me and the people around and if I could summarize into 5 lessons from 2016, this will be it

1. You got to be brave and ask what you want to get what you want.

This has to be my biggest lesson for 2016. You got to be brave and go on and ask what you want in order for you to get it. I believe the strongest force/power in the world is the power of the mind. Your thoughts are very powerful and if there is something you want, you got to manifest it in your thoughts and throw it out to the universe, and just like a boomerang you will see your thoughts turned into reality and come flying back to you.

I did it with my career. I had knew for a long time that the best career path for me was to move towards a people engaging kind of a role. I could imagine my self in that. I told my self that everyday. For over a year I kept manifesting it in my thought and throwing out to the universe and it finally happened last month

But the only reason it happen was because I was brave enough to do something about it. I was brave enough to discuss it with the key decision makers in my company to make the change happen. It is not enough to just have the thought, but you got to be brave enough to do what you what. You need to make it happen and you will get what you want

2. As much you can fall in love, you too can fall out of love and that is not a crime

This is something happened very recently. 2 year plus relationship came to an end. It was perhaps the toughest thing I ever had to do, but I knew it was the right thing to do. That's when I learnt that you can fall in love and you too can fall out of love. It happens and it is not wrong. You got to try to work things out but when you can see that you have reach a point when things are in loop, you got to be brave enough to make the decision.

And it is not wrong to end a relationship, because sometime the hardest thing to do and the right thing to do are the same thing. I had to be strong and have a lot of clarity to make the decision and stick to me. It is tough and will get tougher but I see the light at the end of the tunnel and believe it was the best thing to do

2016 gave me so many wonderful relationship memories which I will cherish and let's see what 2017 has in store for me in terms of dates and relationship

3. Travelling brings you to a whole new world

One thing new I have decided to do 2016 was to do more travelling. I told myself that in 1 year I should go for 3 travels and I was pleased that this year I made 5 travels. It was a mixture of different types of traveling but there is 3 things which I would like to do more is solo traveling, family traveling and travel with someone random.

Traveling never fails to give me so much inner peace and I always come back having so much of energy and clarity. It was fun talking up to random people along the travels and sharing some great stories too.

As for 2017, I am planning to go to Thailand and Sabah/Sarawak atleast. It anyone has similar travel plans do let me know !

4. Friendship

Well friendship speaks for it's own self. You guys know who you are and what an impact you guys make on me. Thank you for being there for the good times and the rough time. It is great knowing that you guys always have my back.

Cheers to new friendships made this year especially couple of my office mates. You guys make my life at work fun as always.

Never stop yourself from making new friends because that's how some of the best things in life happens.

To those who I have lost connection with over the years, if  you are reading this do drop me a text and lets get connected again and build some good times together

5. It is okey to be down 

As much fun you have, there are always going to be moments when you are helpless and you are down. Remember you don't have to beat yourself up over it. This kind of things happens and it is OK to be sad. 

Every individual has their own mechanism to deal with their tough times. Some cry, some rant on Facebook, some drink and maybe some just smile. Just because you don't have the same mechanism with the norm doesn't make you wrong. 

Express it in your own manner and when the moment is over you will know and you will pick yourself up again and be the best version of yourself. Always remember nothing that happens in your life could mean the end of it. Even if the worse possible thing happens to you, you will still pick yourself up, recover and be the best of you again. All we need is some time

Thank you 2016 for everything that has happened. It has shaped me well up for the challenges in 2017. Cheers to life, cheers to happiness and cheers to starting it all over again!

The Rotten Tooth Analogy

Today I want to tell you a story. A story about my tooth. The Rotten Tooth. Ever since I was a little kid, I was never fond about dentist. I don't know why but they have always scare me ever since I was a little child. That's why the only dental check up I ever went was the mandatory dental check up in school and trust me I felt like it was hell every time the dentist came to school

Back in 2012, I can't remember for what reasons, I actually went to the dentist. The dentist did scaling for me and I never liked it in fact I remember it did hurt as well. I remember very well how terrified I was to see the dentist inserting stuffs into my mouth, making me open and all. It was scary.

At the end, the dentist told me "Sukesh, come back in a month time, one of your teeth has some problem. Come back in a month time and lets get that fix.". Guess what I never went there back again.. Well at least for the next four years until last week.

During that four years, the condition of the tooth slowly started to get worse. I started to suffer from sudden striking pain, gums swelling and part of the tooth started to slowly decay and chip off. It was becoming brittle and after four years there wasn't much of the tooth left. As a result of that, two weeks ago I could hardly eat or even chew. Every time something touches the tooth with a bit of pressure, I would get striking pain.

Finally I told myself, I have had enough of this. 4 years is a long time and screw it I am going to go to the dentist and just get the tooth pulled out and get over with it. I can't afford to live everyday with this striking pain in my mouth.

I went to the dentist and the dentist told that my tooth has decayed so bad there was nothing left to save and the only option was to pull it out. But since it has decayed so bad, there isn't much for the dentist to hold and pull while fearing that little bit which is left would break too and that would make things worse.

And there you go I spent the next one hour having my eyes shut and just trying to be brave as the dentist attempted to pull my tooth out. It wasn't an easy ride and despite being injected to feel numb and no pain, I was still feeling the pain as the dentist try to pull it out as it wasn't coming. At one point I just felt like leaving the place if the tooth wasn't coming out. But something in my mind told me to push my self true and get over with it.

Finally it come out and boy what a relief it was. The rotten tooth was over and out. I was bleeding but it feel so light now in my mouth. I felt a sense of success by doing so. Now a week later the gums has almost healed and I don't feel any discomfort or pain. It feels so good and I am glad I took the leap to pull of the tooth out.

Now you might be wondering why am I blabbering to you about my rotten tooth. Well don't think my rotten tooth as just a rotten tooth but think of it as the problems we have in life or the things we are most afraid to do because we have been to comfortable in our comfort zone whereby we don't want to come out of it although the comfort zone is damaging us.

We all face problems in our lives but not all of us are brave enough to deal with our problems. We want to do something with our lives but we never felt brave enough to do. At the end of the day we settle down with what we have rather than what we want.

If you don't love your current job and you are passionate about something else, quit it and follow your heart. It will be scary, it will be difficult but when you finally do it you will be forever thankful for what you did. Take the rotten tooth out, leave what is damaging you and pursue what the heart wants my friend.

Every successful path often starts rough and difficult, be brave my friends and pursue your passion and you will see your life changing.

I am glad I got my rotten tooth out and now it is time I do the same thing with career. It will be tough and scary for me to do but ten years down the road I don't want to be stuck with "the pain of my rotten tooth" in my career. I rather pull it out now and pursue my passion

Under The Spot Light: Acham Yenbadu Madamayada

October 2013, Gautham Menon announced that his next film will be with Simbu.. Being a huge Gautham Menon fan, I have been eagerly anticipating for this movie ever since. Finally after a 3 year wait, it was finally released and I had the chance to watch my magician at work again. Here it is now, my review of Acham Yenbadhu Madamaiyada (AYM).

Story Review

It a movie of two halves to be honest. The first half is an AR Rahman Musical filled with the classy execution of Gautham Menon in portraying love sequence. The setting of the house seemed very familiar with VTV in some ways for me and there was a number of VTV reference used in the dialogues which worked well for the scenes.

Watch the opening tittle carefully and listen well the monologues at the beginning of the film because Gautham actually tells you what kind of ride you are going to get in this movie. The first half of the movie shows the hero who loves his bike more than anything else and meets his sister's friend who that happen to stay with them during their internship period. He clearly likes her but only makes small talks with her but the scenes were portrayed so beautifully, you just can't help to start falling in love.

Soon after he decides to do a backpacking trip travelling South India on his bike with his buddy but later changes plan when the heroine says she wants to join in on the trip. From this point on wards you are treated with some brilliant visuals and credit to cinematographer to show us how beautiful India is.


He realizes he starts falling in love with her and suddenly tragedy strikes. From here on, the film takes a dark and dangerous twist and we move to an heart racing, nervy action second half. Nobody knows what is happening as the movie goes on. Neither the character or the audience understand why things are turning out such way but all they know is that the hero needs to what ever it takes to stay alive, to find out why this dark chapter is happening.

The film ends with the hero finding out what caused all this dark events and how he stops it despite being just a normal boy from a neighborhood.

For me the first half reminded me the class of VTV and the AR Rahman Musical was a real treat to watch. It was beautiful it was classy and Simbu oozing in brilliance under Gautham's mentor-ship.

Meanwhile the second half was dark and thrilling and has the potential to cause the audience to feel disconnected with the film as nobody seems to understand what is happening. For me I felt it was the right way to do it for the film because when sometimes something happens to us we don't really know why until we find it out. Meanwhile some audience might disagree as they would prefer to have some lead to understand what is happening. I leave it up to you to judge

Director Review

Gautham Menon

Without a doubt he is my favorite director. The guy is a Mozart, a magician and an artist. To me he has never failed to produce something magical in every film of his and he continues it with this film. One thing you can count on having a Gautham Menon movie is the beauty of his dialogues. Each monologues, each dialogues uttered are just so ear pleasing to hear. He is indeed a craftsman.

Next thing which he always amazes me is the name of his Hero and Heroine, although this time his heroine's name never light it up for me but his hero's name was definitely and well justified why it was such name. You got to watch it to know.

Another part he always gets it right is the minor details. If you noticed in the film when Simbu and the heroine check in the hotel and walks up the stairs, a character seemed a little shocked to see them. During that frame it is very easy to let it slip but the character later plays a major role in the film and Gautham was brilliant to place the character there to make it seem so casual just like another extra in the film.

My final praise for him will be the timing of "Thali Pogathey". Everyone was in love with the song ever since it was released January this year. Many people would have came to the film just for the song. I have seen many nice songs gets so poorly used in film because the placement of the song was not the right fit. But Gautham Menon timing, placement and the dialogues used just before the song was as quoted by a friend of mine "It is out of the world". I was stunned and in awe with it. Top class and goes to show why he is the best in the business in terms of song placing in the film. Also a shoutout for casting Daniel Balaji in the film. He was just so damn perfect for his role

Meanwhile my flaw for him will be the amount of time it took to release the film. Everyone knows that Gautham loves to do an intense and long post production work.. But for a film that was releases in November 2016, they should never have released the teaser back in August 2015, trailer in December 2015, the first single in January 2016 and the album in June 2016.

This four releases should be much closer to the film release date to build the right up to the film release. Due to this failure many people were getting frustrated and some weren't bothered about the film release. The hype of the film had died by the time the film was released. I hope he works it out better in his next venture

The Cast

Simbu

I have never enjoyed watching any Simbu films to date except VTV. In VTV he was an absolute class and brilliant in every scene. Today in AYM he has once again delivered what he is truly capable of as actor. It was not an easy role to play considering the fact people are going to keep comparing his performance here to VTV and with both film having lengthy classy love portion he needed to come up with something different and yes he did

He played the role looking and sounding very mature. If in VTV we saw a boyish Simbu, here you will see a mature Simbu. I don't know why they decided to shoot with him having such additional weight, whether is that how he was that time or was it insisted by the director to spot the weight but it didn't affect his performance one bit. Simbu has the caliber and the talent to be on of the top actors in the industry if he can get his head in the game and pick quality scripts like this. I wouldn't want to see a top talent like him go down the drain due to poor choice of films

Manjima Mohan

Making her debut in the Tamil Industry with this film, it is clear she is her to stay. Looks stunning
with a smile, mature in her performance but still able to pull a bubbly cute aspect in her performance as well. To make your debut in a Gautham Menon film shows that you must have impressed him very much for him to cast you and I am sure he has seen tons of quality in her

Although this heroine character of a Gautham Menon film will not go down as memorable as his other heroine but she did an amazing job in all her scenes. Her only flaw seems to be she has a little struggle when it comes to crying scenes.

She can only get better after her debut and will be eagerly waiting for her next

The Music

AR Rahman

If God could play music, it must have been taught by AR Rahman. The man is a genius and each of his songs in this film creates some sort of magic in your heart. The combination of AR Rahman - Gautham Menon- Thamarai has worked wonders with Raasali and Thali Pogathey, which is my two favourites in this film.

One doesn't need to mentioned the brilliance of AR Rahman in terms of his background score. It was on point and brilliant. It was so good that it syncs with the film so well you don't realise his music are creating the magic on screen. A true genius

Final Verdict: Acham Yenbadu Madamayada, A Beautifully Thrilling Lovely Film

Under The Spotlight: Iru Mugan

Iru Mugan... The trailer alone was enough to give us all goosebumps.. Vikram is a man who knows no end in pushing himself to the limit. The trailer revealed that there will be two Vikram in it, one being a bearded looking Vikram who seems to be a cop in an undercover operation with Nithyaa Menon being is cop partner and Nayanthara being his love interest. It also shows another Vikram which looks to be a transgender criminal and thus why the film is called Iru Mugan ( 2 Faces)

Story Review

The film takes off right away with an attack on the Indian Embassy in Malaysia. Just that this didn't look right a regular terrorist because a 70 year old man manage to take down a bunch of police force single handily. That's right a 70 year old man takes down cops and he does it with just a puff of an Asthma inhaler.

After reviewing the CCTV footage, they identified that the mastermind behind this attack is an individual named "Love" which was believed to be dead 4 years ago thanks to one of their agent named Akilan portrayed by Vikram.

The film moves forward with Akilan having glimpse of his past and how he killed Love before and is unsure if Love is really alive or is someone else using Love's network to organised this terrorist attack. Nevertheless he is determined to bring the mastermind down. Akilan is shown to be a man with no remorse and emotions and he is only focused in bring this mastermind down.

A series of event leads to Akilan discovering who Love really is and a major plot twist spices up the film. From this point the film moves forward with Akilan trying to bring Love and his grand plan down and a Vikram vs Vikram climax battle  ensures the end of the film

Director Review

Anand Shankar

Would you believe that this is just Anand Shankar's second film only. Huge credit to him for coming up with a proper entertainer. It is a very bold move by such a new director to come up with a script revolving a transgender criminal. Not many would have dared to so and huge credit to him.

I enjoyed how he tried to connect his fictional story to actual historical events and exploring the darker side of Malaysia like movie piracy, prostitution, corruption and fake medications.

The strength of the film is the natural rawness which is portrayed by Akilan and the pace of the film from the moment go. The film was intense and it was nice to see a proper cop vs criminal movie unlike those normal commercial entertainers. 

The downside of the film for me comes down to three points

• Censorship
• Timing of the songs
• Pace change in the second half

The film was brilliant until when they started cutting things off the film which really disrupted the flow of the film. The worse part was when the build up to the hospital scene. I had no idea who where they searching or why are they even going to the hospital. Took me a couple of scenes later to connect with the film again. This I wouldn't blame the director for it.

For me it was very clear that the film was written with songs into it. Personally I felt that the director just tried to fit in the songs into the film because all Tamil film's needs songs. The film would have been stronger without any songs in it except the last one.

The intensity of the first half was brilliant. Got me glued to the screen. Although I anticipated some of the twist of the film but the director did well to keep it wrapped. But something just seems to have happened in the second half and the pace seemed to have drop and lost it's grip on the audience

The Cast

Vikram

Is there any role that this guy can't do. Vikram never fails to amaze with every film he does, he loves to push himself to the limit. This man is the symbol of effort and dedication. His portrayal of the character Love will go on and gain him applause for sure. I think he portrayal as a transgender was more convincing than an actual transgender. The way he changes his body language, the way he speaks and his mannerism. Magical stuff.

But what impressed me more was his role of Akilan in the darker shades.

I enjoyed how he portrayed a character with no remorse and emotions. He was all out to capture Love and it was so convincing. He held the character well and went all out to ensure that he gave two very very distinguished performance.

 Rating: 4.5/5.0

Nayanthara & Nithya Menon

Again it was an easy selection to choose Nayanthara for the role of Meera. I don't know anyone else better to pull off an action girl role. She was amazing in Billa and she was amazing here again in Irumugam.

Her character had a lot of potential to develop into many direction but I was dissapointed the director did not utilize it and choose to focus more on the Vikram vs Vikram portion

On the other hand, I felt Nithya Menon's character could have been given to a new face. Not that she is not good, in fact it was the other way round. She is an amazing actress and this character was a waste of her talent. I don't know why she decided to take it up. She has bags of potential and this film did not come anywhere close to fulfill her potential.

The rating won't be too high as there wasn't  much of a significant contribution to the film by the actress .

The Music

Harris Jeyaraj

I truly enjoyed "Helena" the most. It was peppy and lovely and the songs gets you going whenever you hear it. Meanwhile "Irumugam Settai" was a fast number I enjoyed. The balance two songs were also good but I felt other than "Irumugam Settai" none of the 3 songs had a place in the film. Good songs but wrong film I would say

Another credit to Harris would be the BGM. Right place right time and it keeps you connected to the film. Also note that whenever a character uses "Speed" and when they move there will be those little cyborg machine sound. I think that's another fantastic touch by Harris

Final Verdict: Irumugam, a refreshing take on Special Agents vs Masterminds but needs a little more polishing
